The Prince George Senior Lacrosse League History
Prince George has always shown great support and love for the game of lacrosse. In the early 1970's the fans would fill up the coliseum to witness a hard fought battle between the teams in the old PGSLA. It was during this renaissance that P.G. lacrosse enjoyed perhaps it's finest moment when the P.G. Oldstylers captured the 1974 Presidents cup, the symbol of the Senior B lacrosse supremacy in Canada. While there was a period of time where interest waned, as the late 1980's rolled around they brought with it a renewed interest in Canada's national sport. The beginning of the momentum was an exhibition game in 1988, staged at the coliseum between the Vancouver Burrards and Victoria Pay-Less of the Western Lacrosse Association, which was very well recieved. The following year it was taken one step further when P.G. played host to a W.L.A. regular season game between the Coquitlam Adanacs and the Vancouver Burrards. In 1990 the P.G.S.L.A. was formed and play between Cap-Abilites, First Litre Pub, Tyers Transport and Minute Muffler began in 1991. Although some of the names have changed, Capabilites adding Yellowhead and the nickname 'Stylers, Tyers Transport became the Steamers Pub Devils, First Litre becoming the Art Knapps Celtics and Minute Muffler turning into the Ironhorse Bandits. The League has continued to grow and has firmly embedded itself into the P.G. sports scene. The League has provided an arena where the players can develop there skills and some have used it as a stepping stone into the Major Junior ranks and onto the W.L.A. In 1995 PG played host to the Presidents cup in which the Akwesasne Thunder beat the Burnaby Lakers to take the title in front of a sold out crowds in the Kin Centre complex. In 1997 the Capabilites OldStylers played host to the Senior B Provinicial finals against the Burnaby Lakers. In 1998 the '74 Oldstylers were recognized for thier Canadian title and were inducted into the P.G. Hall Of Fame. In 1999 the league contiues to add to its foundation by hosting the inaugral Alcan Cup Senior Lacrosse Championship.
